Stuart, FL---On August 18, 2011, Debbbie Roberts, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), and owner of Massage & Fitness Professionals of the Treasure Coast, presented her “Shoulder Dysfunction” talk to 100 people at the Florida State Massage Therapy Association (FSMTA) Treasure Coast Chapter meeting. Roberts spoke on the importance of assessing and not guessing for shoulder dysfunction. Roberts, a personal trainer and group exercise leader for over 27 years, created a 3-part signature system to help LMT’s with assessment, multiple treatment modalities, and muscle stabilization. Roberts helped therapists learn how to assess soft tissue involvement for shoulder impingement, bursitis, tendonitis, and partial tears of the rotator cuff. The lecture included; assessment, discussion of treatment modalities, and how to add stability back to the shoulder girdle. Additionally, the therapists learned how an injury could occur, how to recognize the difference between mobility or a stability problem, and the understanding of rehabilitation principles that should be followed when dealing with shoulder pathologies. LMT’s must earn 24 continuing education (CEU’s) hours every two years in order to keep his or her license current and active. Massage is recognized by many insurance companies yet does require a physician’s prescription in order to file for reimbursement. Massage is an excellent adjunct to physical therapy, chiropractic, or osteopathic care. Robert’s motto: “If you don’t assess you simply guess.”
  • Step #1 Assessment: Assessment protocols for the upper extremity.
  • Step # 2 Treatment: This is a hands-on treatment for myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, muscle energy, and contrast therapy.
  • Step #3 Muscle Stabilization: This is the best part! Based on steps #1 and #2, ATM technique therapists understand which muscles to activate for the best possible outcome for the patient.
